Origin Story
This game is most commonly known as a Word Ladder.
It actually has a famous origin: it was invented by Lewis Carroll (the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) on Christmas Day in 1877.
Carroll originally called the game "Doublets" because you start with a pair of words. He created it to entertain two young girls who were bored during the holidays, and he later published the rules and a series of puzzles in Vanity Fair magazine.
